Twenty Jātaka Tales Enters Public Domain and Is Available on HathiTrust

Noor’s classic retellings of Jātaka tales for children, Twenty Jātaka Tales, has recently entered the public domain and has been digitized by Google. Jātaka tales, or “Birth-stories,” are fables about the past lives of Gautama Buddha, in both human and animal form and exceptional acts of self-sacrifice. These form an important part of the canon of Buddhist literature, from the Pāli Canon to the Sanskrit Jātaka-Mālā of Arya Śura. Noor’s retellings are charming and refined, and the original illustration by Henriette Willebeek Le Mair are sensitively rendered and are exceptional even for works produced in what has been called a golden age of fantasy illustration.
