Scholars Sara Kuehn and Lukas Pokorny Publish “On Inayati Female Visions in Austria: Female Leadership in the Western Sufi Tradition” in Religion in Austria 4

Peer-reviewed academic journal Religion in Austria has published an article by art historian and religious studies scholars Sara Kuehn and Lukas Pokorny, of the University of Vienna. While their article, “On Inayati Female Visions in Austria: Female Leadership in the Western Sufi Tradition,” focuses principally on Zumurrud Butta’s role as a contemporary murshida within the esoteric school, it also provides a useful historical overview of the Inayatiyya and its gender-inclusive practices and teachings, as well as Noor’s status as a shahida and model of niswan (female spiritual chivalry). As the “first Sufi saint of the Sufi Order of the West,” her addition to the Inayatiyya silsila is understood by the authors as a “reconfirmation of women’s spiritual leadership” within the Order.
